Facts about Recycling
For hundreds and thousands of years, man has always had the desire to take care of the planet, and reuse what ever resources he has consumed. Materials such as metal and excess wood could be melted down or reused to make swords and knives, tools, paper, homes, and other things. The fur from animals and the vines of certain plants could be used to make pillows, blankets, clothing and hats to keep warm. Dirt was often reused to make mud homes and stones could be used to make stone homes. In the late medieval period, coal was once as a source of alternative energy, in order to stop the dominance of wood as a source of energy. Man was always been able to find a use for everything.
Why Recycle?
There are numerous benefits of recycling, including:
- Reduced Waste - reduces the amount that ends up in landfills and the waste that can potentially harm ecosystems.
- Reduces Greenhouse Gas Omissions - that may potentially cause disturbances in the earths atmosphere.
- Helps Conserve Our Planets Resources - such as trees, precious metals, fossil fuels, soil, and water.
- Helps to create new jobs in alternative energy - helps create new technologies such as the running of cars on alternative energy, the building of solar powered homes, and metal recycling industries.
- Saves Energy - reducing electricity means the reduction in the demand for oil, coal, and natural gas.
- Saves Money - helps families become more self reliant - where they do not have to depend as much on electricity, brand new products, and industry itself.
- Brings Awareness of Recycling Benefits to Communities - when multiple people recycle, it makes more people aware of the benefits of recycling.
Almost everything in your household can be recycled. From recycled glass, to recycled plastics, to reusable wood, and metals - everything around us is at least reusable in some way.
Great Interesting Facts About Recycling:
- Recycled plastics are often reused to make carpeting and clothing, and also re-manufactured to make new products.
- What materials are most of our household stuff made out of? The majority of our electronics, tools, poles, and household items are made from steel, low grade plastics, and wood. Steel is made up of a combination of iron and carbon and is reused and recycled to make cars, shovels, ladders, computers, printers, wheel barrows, fencing, and other items.
- Wood shavings and saw dust can be reused and made into boxes, paper bags, and cardboard paper.
- Did you know that the country Brazil does not have a garbage pickup system? All the stuff that people accumulate and no longer want is sold for money to other people, for them to reuse. Nothing is considered waste.

The idea of landfills has been around since the early 1940's and 1950's. Soon, people were just expecting the garbage pickup truck to take our trash and put it in the landfills to rot and decompose. But a small percentage of people began to realize that the very plastics that were thrown away would take literally thousands of years to decompose.
People were beginning to catch on, and as the idea of landfills had become more widespread, so has the amount of people aware of the benefits of recycling.
But still for some people, teaching about the benefits of recycling isn't enough to get it through to their heads, and literally every single day, there amasses a huge amount of plastics and metals that end up in the garbage, that could literally be reused to help out our environment.
It is up to each one of us to take care of our environment and protect it, and give back to earth what it needs to sustain itself - whether its through using alternative energy, doing garbage pickups, or recycling scrap metals. This is our only planet that we currently have, and so we shall do our best to protect it.
